Pam and Thom find a clean beach in zone 2!

If you know zone 2, you know it includes JM Pier and to find it this clean is pretty amazing!  I have read in the Lumina News that the WB police department are cracking down on litter and have been writing tickets.  Maybe we are seeing a result!  Thank you WB PD.

Hi Ginger,

We walked Zone 2 this morning (5/26).  The beach was the cleanest we’ve seen in a long time!  We picked up a half a Walmart bag of trash.  Hope the whole summer goes this way, except for the fact that there were no tracks Sad smile.

May 9--Nancy finds condoms and dog poop on beach

May 9th:  Once again, there was quite a bit of trash to be found on WB this morning.  I collected four bags of trash, including a balloon, a pair of shoes, lots of plastic wrappers and cups, as well as a used condom and the empty wrapper.  Yuck!  (The condom was scooped off the sand with a plastic toy shovel also found on the beach this morning.)  A lady actually stopped me to report her sighting of this particularly disgusting item.  She then said, "People are pigs!"  Ya think??  :)
In addition to the four bags of trash, the following items were taken to the trash cans:  One blanket and the empty half gallon of vodka next to it.  Can you say OUCH???  One large glass bottle; sandy contents unknown, three beach chairs, one towel, one shirt, and 1 1/2 pairs of sandals, and a partridge in a pear tree!
On the south end, I found a very large hole/trench that had been dug up the side of the dune, under the roped off area, and into the bird sanctuary.  This was very upsetting, and I could only hope the thoughtless people that invaded the birds' refuge did not cause any harm or the abandonment of a newly laid nest.   Ugh!!  This was later reported to Lindsay Addison of Audubon so she could assess the damage to the dune and any potential disturbance of the nesting birds.
Just before leaving the beach, a visitor from Tennessee saw me collecting trash near JM Pier and had the following to say:  "It is horrible how people here just trash this beach!  I can not believe folks just get up and leave behind all this litter.  I have had to clean the beach of trash before finding a spot to place my beach chair in the sand. "  Oh my.  Is this really the impression we want to make on our visitors?

My last observation of the morning involved a lady on the beach with a German Shephard that was doing his business in the dunes.  She must have been in an awful hurry 'cause she didn't even bother to pick up after her pooch.  Double yuck!!
Here's to a nest very soon for WB!

Cinco de Mayo with Nancy, Roger and a Rubber Duck!

Hi Ginger,

Here is the latest news coming from Wrightsville Beach:

Cinco de Mayo:  I collected three grocery store sized bags of random trash, once again, mostly plastic wrappers and containers, and three balloons.  On the north side of CYC, I found an empty beer box and thirteen empty cans.  Along with the trash, was a shirt and pair of rainbow flip-flops.  The cans were placed in the recycling and the shirt and shoes left by the trash can.  I met a gentleman at the site named Roger that helped me to clean the beach.  He was so upset that someone would leave such a mess on our beautiful shore.  A short distance past the cans, I found a pair of pants and a set of keys on a lanyard.  I placed these items next to a trash can, as well.  At that point, I began to wonder if someone had been arrested on the beach intoxicated and nude!  (The next day, I was given the chance to ask....more on that later.)

The good news is that there are others out there helping to KIC.  I had noticed several styrofoam cups and wrappers near JM Pier that I planned to pick up on my return trip up the beach.   However, when I arrived back at the pier, the litter was gone!  Apparently, some kind soul had already beat me to it~~thank you, thank you, thank you!

The most interesting find of the day was a little yellow rubber ducky.  I noticed it at the tide line just north of JM Pier.  I couldn't resist the photo op of this dated marine debris.  Obviously this little ducky was launched with a romantic notion that it would sail the vast blue sea to distant shores far, far away.  Sadly, in reality, this was just another piece of plastic trash discarded into our precious ocean; thankfully spit back out of the surf onto WB only one day later.   What are people thinking of....really??

Have a great weekend!

Excitement from Susan about our nest hatching!

Well, what an exciting week it has been!! I have just been so busy bragging to everyone about our successful hatching on Sunday, and excavation on Wednesday. ;) It has also been such a privilege to work with so many other nice WBSTP volunteers.

Because of all the excitement, I had my heart set on finding turtle tracks this week. Alas, I found none. However, I did find a substantial amount of litter in zone #3 today. For the past few weeks, I have found little to no glass bottles, which is a nice trend, because last year I remember finding quite a few. Today I did not find a single piece of glass. I collected one Target bag of trash, and 3/4 of my reusable bag (3 grocery bags) of reusables and recyclables.

The majority of the trash consisted of plastic such as cracker, chip, and snack wrappers; drink lids; straws; bottle caps; ziplock, grocery, and ice bags, and cups. I also found one large clear sheet of plastic that was perhaps from a case of bottled water or something. For some reason I also found a lot of random pieces of rope and string today, along with stray clothing items such as hair ties (lots of these), socks, and a pair of plaid boxer shorts.

There was a seemingly unending number of cigarette butts.

Reusables and recyclables included aluminum beer and juice cans, plastic water bottles, one pair of neon green flip flops, a pair of blue snorkeling flippers, and several sand toys.

One thing that still bums me out is other people's disregard for the litter at the beach. I am trying to get past this, I really am, because I realize there are a lot of other like minded people in this world. But today I had an experience that really bummed me out. While I was walking my zone, I was approaching a family of four: a mom, dad, and two elementary school age kids. As I walked, I could see them looking at me with a strange look, as though they disapproved of what I was doing or were angry at me. (I don't get this look often, so I found it weird.) As I drew nearer, the family hustled from the water up towards one of the beach accesses. As they passed, I could see that the daughter was eating a piece of fruit. Then as I reached the spot where they had been standing, I found a plastic produce sticker in the sand that said "black plum." I was so sad that this young girl had seen me picking up litter, then still decided to throw a piece of plastic on the ground.

I'm not really sure what to do about this. Today I have been asking myself, "how can I help spread the word about keeping our beach clean, and reach these people who don't seem to care?" I will meditate on this this week.

week 11 Susan finds little trash at JM PIer

This morning was perfectly picturesque at Wrightsville Beach.

There was a cool breeze, and for the first time in months, I was able to walk without getting sweaty. It was so refreshing! I also love it when the ocean water feels warmer than the air temperature-- nature's hot tub.

The first thing I noticed upon walking onto the beach at Johnnie Mercer's Pier was six beach chairs, in various states of disrepair, that were all on or near the tide line. Two of them were in the water and slowly being dragged out to sea. I made three trips up to the trash can with them, carrying two at a time.

A man stood very nearby with his metal detector and watched me but did not offer to help. I did not think this was very nice. So my first thought of the morning was, "this does not bode well for me." But fortunately, I was wrong.

Overall, there was really not much litter at all today. In fact, there was so much less than normal that I am wondering if perhaps someone did a clean sweep yesterday evening to prepare for today's big surf tournament. There were lots of cigarette butts and plastic debris at the high tide line that obviously washed up during the night, but overall the areas that normally have lots of trash were not bad at all today.

The changing area next to JM Pier, for example, is usually full of clothing, shoes, diapers, fast food bags, etc. It is often just a terrible mess here, so much so that I never include it in my normal beach litter count. But today there was nothing except for two plastic water bottles that had both rolled under the wooden benches.

So really, my walk was quite nice today. I only collected one bag of trash, which consisted primarily of bottle caps and cigarette butts from the tide line. I also filled my reusable bag 1/2 full (equivalent to 2 grocery bags) with recyclables and reusables. This included 2 plastic bottles and 9 aluminum soda/beer cans.

7 of the cans I actually retrieved from one specific spot. They were all buried in the sand. I noticed the tip of one gleaming in the sun, and when I went to pick it up, the sand under it seemed suspiciously mounded. So I kicked it around and discovered 6 more cans. Other reusables included 12 sand toys and 2 pairs of flip flops.

There was quite a bit of activity on the beach as early as 6 am today, including a very large structure that was being set up for the surfing tournament near access #27. I hope there were no turtle tracks there! Overall, it was fun to see such a flurry of activity there early in the morning. There was definitely a lot of energy and excitement!

1,596 butts and "no thank you" to straws by Danielle

Hey Ginger!

I wish that I could say that we went out to WB a ton over the month of June, but unfortunately I didn't get out to the beach as much as I would have liked. :(  Thank goodness I know that all of you are out there helping keep WB clean!! :D  Here are the totals for the littered items that I counted for the 5 clean ups we did in June.

Cigarette butts: 893
Straws: 71
Caps: 23
Shoes: 5.5 pairs

Obviously, we pick up a lot more than what is counted... sometimes the litter smells SO bad from all of the cigarette butts that I only focus on counting "high volume" items ;)

Also, I know that I said that I was going to share by month... but I'm thinking that I may email you after each clean up (we'll see!!).   Went out to JM pier last night (July 1)... thankfully it wasn't overwhelming like it has been in the past.  Lots of litter though.  (Just look at how this one 20 minute clean up compares to FIVE 20 minute clean ups in June!!... crazy)

Cigarette butts: 703
Straws: 64  (!!) 20 minutes... 64 straws in 20 minutes!!!  Can I please ask everyone to say "no thank you" to a straw?!?  And for parents to pretty please not buy juice boxes?!?  Please. :)
Caps: 63
Plastic utensils: 7

Attached is my attempt to sort all of the disgusting litter that we picked up!  YUCK!!  <--there was a panty liner and (used) condom!! *sigh* I can deal with a lot of stuff... shoot... I've counted over 23,000 cigarette butts... but GEEZ... some things are just REALLY nasty!!!

Most of our walking time has been increased because of picking up all this trash!

Very Sad......

Zone 3 Wednesdays

week 9 Julie--Daipers and Shower Caps--oh my!!!

Ginger,

I subbed in Zone 2 for Brian this morning.  No tracks L.

There was a lot of trash, of which we picked up four grocery bags.  We only collected trash below the escarpment. Most of it was water bottles, beer cans, the usual array of toys, a Frisbee, single flip-flop, wet-wipes, straws, food wrappers and cups, and an absolutely ridiculous amount of diapers.

Plus I cleaned up around the gazebo, just because it was such a mess.  I hate that that is the first thing many visitors see when they come to Wrightsville Beach for the first time.  The trash cans at the entrance were not full, but there was still a lot of trash around them.  The outdoor shower had a bunch of trash and clothes, food wrappers, and more diapers at the gazebo.  Threw away the men’s t-shirt and boxers that were under the bench at the gazebo and mixed with sand (may have been there for awhile) but left the ladies pair of shoes and beach cover-up on the end of the bench that was clean.  Hopefully she will return for them.

And shower caps – the disposable kind.  I’d never found those before but there were 3 or 4 that I picked up around the shower/gazebo area.

Beautiful sunrise but a messy morning.

week 8 Susan--Jewelry for KIC!!!

Hi Ginger,

Yesterday, (Friday, June 24) was the first time this summer I have been to the beach after rainfall. Woo hoo! Because of this, it was hard to discern patterns in the sand, so I did lots of checking and re-checking to make sure I wasn't mising any turtle tracks.   (Thanks so much for "checking and re-checking" Susan!!) There was, however, still lots of very visible litter.

My totals for yesterday in zone 3 were 2 bags of trash, and 1 very full reusable bag of recyclables (equivalent to 4 grocery bags of recyclables). Litter included:

22 plastic bottle caps
2 plastic spoons
1 plastic knife
1 plastic grocery bag
4 styrofoam cups
5 ads for Sandbar

15 sand toys

1 toy car
5 ziplock bags
14 plastic cups
1 beer bottle
15 plastic straws
1 child's Croc shoe
13 plastic water/juice bottles

7 aluminum beer/soda cans
1 bottle of Africa's best Herbal Oil

59 cigarette butts

Sadly, one of the ziplock bags I found was full of coquilla clams that had been left to die. I am hoping that it was done by a child who didn't know they were live organisms.

Large items that I discarded at the beach included 1 tee shirt, 1 white hotel towel, and 1 pole from an umbrella.

I wanted to also mentioned that I added an item to my Etsy shop this week that's to commemorate the efforts of the KIC team. I'm hoping to spread the word about our work! http://www.etsy.com/listing/76385528/recycled-bottle-cap-seashell-pendant?ref=pr_shop

week 8 Cindy---JM Pier continues to have high trash volume

Ginger,
Well, today was the worst day so far for trash for our zone.  It may have been that I walked without my partner Gina today.  So here goes.  I picked up 4 five gallon buckets of trash today.  (= 8 bags)
There were cans, shoes, floats, shovel, 4 towels, bottle caps, bottles, chairs, boogie board, paper plates, socks, sand pails.  There were also 2 of the blue trash containers turned over near the middle of my zone. Took about 10 minutes to clean that area! ( Not included in the bucket count) The area around the pier is the worst as well as near the bathroom and gazebo. Really disgusting there........I started at 6:05 and it was almost 7:30 before I finished today.  It usually takes about 30 minutes. The fact that I was paying more attention to looking for tracks may have also slowed me down as well.
The End!!!! Ha!!!!!!
Have a good one!

Susan--41 bottle caps and 1 cool sun hat!!

Hi Ginger,

It was yet another lovely morning in Zone 3 today.

Contrary to the norm, I did not find any large items, such as flip flops, clothing items, towels, or chairs. There were plenty of small bits of litter, though! I picked up a total of 1 bag of trash, and filled half of my large reusable bag with recyclables (which is equivalent to 2 grocery bags of recyclables).

My dog Tiesto helped me sort through the litter after I returned home. It must have all smelled very interesting!

Collected items included:

5 beer bottles
7 aluminum beer cans
158 cigarette butts
41 plastic water/Gatorade bottle caps
5 plastic water/soda/iced tea bottles
1 plastic dog toy
1 tennis ball
5 plastic spoons
1 plastic fork
3 styrofoam cups
11 plastic straws
4 plastic sand toys
1/2 bag of assorted paper and plastic trash, such as granola bar and candy wrappers

Particularly gross items that I threw away immediately at the beach were 2 dog poops and 1 dirty diaper. The biggest surprise to me of the day was the 41 plastic bottle caps. I have a feeling there were a lot more that I missed, too, because they tend to blend in with shells sometimes.

I also found a very large, flawless Olive shell that is quite a beauty.

Has anyone else ever met the gentleman who cleans the restrooms at 7:30 am at Johnnie Mercer's Pier? He wears a cool sun hat and is very nice.

weeks 4 -7 Gina and Cindy zone 3 (14 bags of trash!!!)

Gina and Cindy are new volunteers this year and they are walking in zone 3.  They have been collecting trash for a while, but we have just been able to connect through email.  I am so excited to meet Gina and Cindy in cyber world and can't wait to meet them in the real world!  I am so thrilled that they have been picking up trash in zone 3.  This zone is near JM Pier and can be quite overwhelming.  Thank you Gina and Cindy.

The following items FILLED UP 4 GROCERY BAGS

2 CONDOM WRAPPERS
PLASTIC CONTAINERS
A WHOLE BUNCH OF PIECES OF PLASTICS FROM ITEMS
PAPERS, INCLUDING TAGS FROM ITEMS
BEER CANS
PIECES OF STRING & NETTING
METAL BEER CAN TOPS
3 FLIP FLOPS
UNDERWEAR
SOCKS

IN ADDITION TO THE ABOVE ITEMS, THE FOLLOWING WAS PICKED UP OFF THE BEACH AND THROWN AWAY IN THE TRASH CANS:

2 BLANKETS
2 BEACH TOWELS

GINA DEVAUGHN
CINDY WILSON

A side note is that John and I were at the beach on Tuesday night and we picked up litter in zone 3.  Perhaps we picked up the condom from one of the condom wrappers that Gina and Cindy collected.  Also, John had his brand new Reef flipflops stolen while we were picking up trash.  I already checked with Gina and she said the flipflops they collected did not match the description.....bummer.....

week 6 Susan zone 3--recycling, hoels and plastic

Hi Ginger,

It is so interesting to me to see how the beach changes each Friday morning that I go. This morning, there were a lot of people walking, running, and lounging, even as early as 6:00 am. The sand seemed particularly hot, dry and powdery, which I am sure has something to do with our extreme lack of rain lately.

Today I collected 3 bags of trash and one large bag of recyclables (one large bag converts into 4 bags making Susan's total bags = 7).  There was a very high concentration of litter right next to Johnnie Mercer's Pier; I collected one whole bag of trash there alone, most of which consisted of snack wrappers and chip bags.

The bulk of what I picked up today was plastic water and Gatorade bottles-- I found a total of 15 of these. At one moment I looked out across the high tide line and could just see plastic shimmering in the sand. Conversely, I found only one glass beer bottle and a few beer cans, which is drastically less than normal. I can only assume that this is due to the very hot weather.

One thing I observed today is that there seemed to be several areas where people had just sat down, smoked 5-10 cigarettes, and stuck the butts right in the sand like an ashtray.

Ugh. This makes me concerned not only for these individuals' blatant disregard of the environment but also for their personal health. Another thing I observed today is that the vast majority of the items in the trashcans were Rita's cups, aluminum cans and plastic bottles. Of course, I am grateful that these items made it into the trashcans and were not left on the beach. But it seems like a real shame that all of this is going in trash when the vast majority of it is recyclable. I really do think that people would use recycling bins for cans and plastic if they were right alongside the trash cans.

The most interesting thing I found today was a very deep hole with a sea turtle sand sculpture right next to it. I am not sure if this qualifies as irony or just deserves a facepalm.

week 3 (Thurs. 5/19) Renee zone 2

Since Renee is using a "large" reusable bag, I'm counting that as 4 bags.  The reason is:  my HT reusable bag will hold 3 plastic bags if filled jam-packed full!.

Like I said in my last email....it was great getting back to the beach.  I really appreciated your suggestion about re-usable bags rather than plastic bags.  You might be happy to hear that it seems like more people are using the recycling station at Wrightsville Beach.  I bring my recyclables there and, after Earth Day, I could not fit any plastics or metals into the bins.  They were overflowing and people had to leave their things next to the bins rather than inside them.  A few days later, I was there when one of the recycle trucks was there and the drivers told me that they are having to do more loads because the bins are getting filled up more quickly.  While I was there about 4 guys from the college were recycling bags and bags of beer cans and other recyclables.  I said they must have had quite a party...they laughed but I also thanked them for recycling.  So, there are all kinds of signs that people are starting to recognize the importance of recycling.

Zone 2  Thursday May 19th

I'm using a large re-usable shopping bag/tote.  I filled one bag.

When you say, "one bag" it doesn't really sound like that much.

So, I took a picture of all the shovels, pails, flip flops, nets, bottle caps and cigarette butts that fit into that bag. Maybe a picture will be worth more than words.  I also have a picture of some of the things I moved away from the shoreline....a baby stroller, and a chair.

I also picked up pieces of styrofoam.  When I picked up the big pieces I noticed some tiny white pellets that were caught up in the debris.  Sadly, I couldn't pick it all up.  I've attached two more pics:  a close up and as far as I looked....little pieces caught in the debris all down the beach.

Until next week,
Renee

Ginger,
As I looked over the pics I sent to you.....I realize I forgot to mention the two little wheels I found .....  they weren't together either.  They were seperated and I found them on different parts of the beach.

Okay :o)  this really is my last email about trash until next week. :o)
Renee

"WB Ducks" week 3 (Fri 5/20) Susan Miller zone 3

Hi Ginger,

I was really excited about getting started this morning. In fact, yesterday evening I asked my husband, "Do you know what tomorrow is? He replied without hesitation, "Turtle day." That is because I had been talking about it all week. ;)

This year I am collecting litter in a large reusable bag from Ikea that my sister gave me. I think it is actually intended to be a beach bag, which is nice because it has an arm strap and a plastic coating so that I can easily hose it off each week. It is 4 times the size of a regular plastic grocery bag.

This morning (Friday, May 20) in Zone 3, the litter was really not so bad. However, the tide line was extremely high and the cut off was very steep, so that led me to believe that a lot of the litter was probably already swept out to sea overnight. I picked up:
2 beer cans
1 soda can
1 beer bottle
1 plastic funnel
1 miniature toy truck
several straws and plastic bottle caps
1 Subway bag, which had blown up in the dunes
70 cigarette butts
1 mini plastic spoon
1 plastic knife
1 clock in/out slip that had the employee's full name and hours worked on it

There were a lot of butts around Johnnie Mercer's Pier- a lot more than I had time to pick up, unfortunately. The nicest surprise of the day was when I reached beach access #32, two ducks came waddling over the dune. They then turned around and walked straight down the access. It was really very cute.

Have a happy weekend,
Susan Miller
