Sorry I haven't reported in awhile...I've been out of town and been relying on wonderful subs to cover : )
Here's the report for this week:
Tuesday, 7/19: Zone 4 - 1 full bag - nothing out of the ordinary
Friday, 7/22: Zone 0 - 1/2 bag, but much classier trash (glass instead of plastic drinking cup) - and forgetful fishermen that left a whole container of bait shrimp. We also picked up a few spent fireworks...definitely not what nesting turtles would be drawn to.
Also, there was a tent at the very north end all set up with coolers, fishing poles, chairs, etc. We called the WB police, but no one answered. So we called the Wilmington police and they patched us in. The policeman came while we were just leaving so hopefully they won't be camping again.

week 10 A Wedding & A Helping Hand by Gina & Sami

TRASH REPORT ZONE 3 Wednesday, JULY 6TH, 2011
Today I walked with my daughter, Sami, 12 yrs. old - (Cindy, hope your foot is feeling better) Besides collecting 4 Bags of Trash, it was a very interesting morning! We saw a Sun-Rise Wedding on the beach and met a young man, along our walk that offered to help pick up trash, & asked us for an extra trash bag, so I gladly gave him one, and thanked him.
We collected 4 Plastic Bags of Trash
plastic straws, plastic spoons, bottle caps, lots of pieces from firework items, beer bottles, soda cans, plastic shovels, flip flops, 2 broken chairs, boogie board, sheet, 2 towels, bathing suit and a comforter.

week 10 Joy finds 100 fireworks casings & dog tracks & tents

Well on the positive side, it was not as bad as I was expecting. No turtle tracks either. I picked up 2/3 of a 13 gallon trash bag full of plastic wrapping from fireworks, remnents of fireworks, (3 bags)
plastic bottles, beer cans, plastic bottle tops, pair of shoes, etc. Weighed about 8 pounds. There were two cabanas up near lifeguard # 13 which had previously been reported. I reported again.
Three sets of dog tracks. Lots of areas where people felt the sand was their on personal ashtray.
Along the high tide mark I found about one hundred of the 3 inch plastic fireworks casings. I am sure there was more. I picked up as much as I could find. About 100. It was hard plastic and where it had exploided it was very sharp. It will be very unpleasant for the unsuspecting foot.
Our nest at the south end though was undisturbed, thank goodness.

week 10 Michelle HUGE HOLES!!!!
Good July 6TH from Zone 4,
I expected to find more trash this morning because of the holiday, and was I ever right. FOUR bags full of trash, which is a record day for me! Beach towels, chairs, plastic toys, flip flops, a mans shirt, cigarette lighter, 4TH of July sparklers, water bottles, aluminum cans, straws, two boggie boards, 42 cigarette butts, and an amazing amount of litter!
There are TWO HUGE HOLES between the Oceanic and the water tower. One is so deep that they have a ramp to walk down into it. There was a beach chair in the bottom of the hole next to two shovels. Several Bud Light beer cans around the top of the hole. That hole is so deep that when I stood in it I could not see out. I am 5'5"! The other hole is so deep that even though the tide was out, there is still water in the bottom. Please be careful and don't fall in these holes!!!
Also a lot of trash under Crystal Pier. Lots of restaurant receipts, chairs, and a key to "room 301".
The more trash I found this morning, the harder I looked for turtle tracks. Unfortunately, there were none for me. Let's keep looking and not give up hope:) Michelle

No turtle tracks. One small crab hole in the upper left corner of staked off turtle nest area.
John and I knew the day after the 4th of July meant finding a lot of trash on the beach so we were prepared--or so we thought. Our usual walk time of 50 minutes was, instead, 1 hour and 45 minutes, because of all the stuff we picked up. We were simply disgusted, frustrated, and upset. The amount of leftover sparklers, fireworks, etc. was terrible. If there are any doubters out there as to whether WB has a littering problem, they needed to be on the beach this morning to see the evidence.
Our report:
Multiple cartons/containers of fireworks/sparklers and all the leftover debris from them--see attached photos
13 very full trash bags (H/T throwaway style) of:
Lots of debris from above--sticks, shells, plastic caps. This trash was most disturbing because in many instances it was too small to pick up w/o a sieve.
7 (single) flip flops
4 t-shirts
10 water bottles
5 soda/beer cans
6 plastic buckets, shovels, and molds
Lots of miscellaneous trash--cigarette butts, bandaids, plastic straps, plastic wrappers, candy wrappers, empty Lunchable containers, lots of fruit rinds,
radish slices, baggies, plastic cups, dirty diaper, and two dollar bills.
The only bright spot was the thanks we got from a couple from Charlotte for cleaning the beach.

week 5 Kathleen Holly 3 days in zone 5
Good Morning and happy Mem Day... this am went for my usual perambulator.. found, FOUND! 3 pkg of unopened bombs, 3 pkg (2 unopened rockets), launchers (used), exploded stuff, boxes the stuff came in, 2 pr googles (????), 1 pr men's flip flops, 5 empty Miller Lite cans and a cig lighter.. think that is pretty much that haul. I took the the unopened stuff over to the WBFD. Also found usual debris ... super soda cups, straws, candy wrappers.. but the firecracker really was the topper...
On my perambulation when I found the rockets.. there were a total of 3 pkg x 18 per pkg of unused rockets still in the sealed pkg. There were a total of 8 (2 4pks) unused rockets, 5 sparklers, a launcher.. forgot to put total.. it was a real find..
I did think of taking them home but wasn't sure if being on the beach had degraded them or whatever.. best let the FD have a crack at them..

No signs of any turtles on my walks.. 2 bags of trash this am. beach chair and umbrella.. ladies bikini bottoms (I have an idea why.. found other items), boys shorts, glass wine bottles, Miller Lite Beer cans (5) (very popular beer), man's work glove, googles, paper litter, bait pkgs, 1 gal sealed containers with stuff.. (2; yuck) lots of cig butts today.. mostly Salems ????, kiddle shovel...
Alas, no mommy turtle came ashore..

Hi Ginger.. I picked up 2 1 gal bags.. mostly cig butts, paper cups, straws, beer cans (the fascination with Miller Lite). Gave away 2 shovels I found.. One visitor who was fishing took one of her bags and began picking up too.. YEA!!!!! some fisherpeople and surfers thanked me.. The thanks goes to you and everyone else who makes the effort..

week 5 zone 1 John and Terri
Ginger,
On our patrol this morning in Zone 1, Terri and I picked up two full bags of trash (H/T size). I guess because of the holiday weekend, there was much to collect. There were pieces of a whole watermelon, eaten by people and finished off by the gulls; several orange skins; a large quantity of fireworks residue; candy wrappers; men's underwear, bra cups, straws, cigarette butts, children's beach toys, and several towels. We also found in one spot in front of Shell Island an abandoned beach chair, towels, and clothing which we did not collect.
The most interesting thing we saw was a pretty good sand sculpture. See attached photo.
