Friday, June 7, Zone 0

This morning I was very curious to see what the beach would be like with Tropical Storm Andrea churning out over the water. Turns out I couldn't see much of anything because the wind was blowing so hard! Luckily, though, that was about the worst of it. I managed to complete my walk without getting rained on all that much, and it was actually quite interesting to see the dark clouds rapidly changing shape in the sky.

Admittedly, because of the stormy conditions, I was not quite as diligent as I normally would be about finding trash and picking it up, because I walked pretty much as fast as I could in all that blowing sand. But I did still find a few items. These included: 

- 1 motor oil bottle
- 2 balloons
- 1 sand toy
- 1 lighter
- 1 Gatorade bottle
- 3 plastic straws
- 1 plastic sunblock lid

I also came across some very large cannonball jellyfish. (My foot's in there for perspective.)

Week 4: Doss and Abrons in zone 0.

We found a small bag of trash in zone 0. mostly cups, a bottle and such.

week 5: Michelle enjoys walking in the rain and she finds a tire

Hi Ginger,

Today is May 30th and I collected 1/2 bag of trash.  I picked up 2 plastic water bottles, 2 plastic bags, 1 plastic cup, 1 pair of girls flip flops, and 1 pair of children's undies.  I also found a car tire on the very northern part of the beach.  It was full of sand and water, and I was only able to drag it a short way above the tide line.  Maybe when Beryl leaves, we can remove it from the beach.  

I actually really enjoyed my walk in the rain this morning.  How often do you get to be the ONLY one on the beach?!?!?!  Michelle

Good Morning,

The good news for Zone 0 on Wed the 23rd is that there was only 1 balloon, 1 plastic baggie, and 1 piece of paper.  The sad news is that there were no turtle tracks.  Maybe some of the other walkers will have better luck today!  Enjoy the week, Michelle

5/15: Zone 4 - just a bucket handle -- which is great for zone 4!

5/18: Zone 0 - 1/2 grocery bag - plastic cups & a bottle

week 3- Michelle find 6 beach towels in zone 0

Hi Ginger,

Today is May 16, 2012, and I walked Zone 0.  A stormy looking sky, but still a beautiful sunrise.

The following is what I collected:

-  1 Bud Light can

-  1 plastic water bottle

-  1 set of ear buds

-  1 red solo cup

-  1 sock (not a pair, just 1 sock)

-  1 large plastic toy shovel

-  1 flat bed sheet (queen or king?)

-  several tissues/paper towels

-  several tiny pieces of white plastic

-  SIX BEACH TOWELS

Not counting the linens, I'd say there was 1 plastic (sorry Ginger) grocery bag of trash.

No sea turtle tracks, but hopeful.  Thank you for ALL of your work!!!

We found only 1 cup. 1 water bottle, 1 child's bucket, 1 pair of flip flops and 2 scraps of paper. (1/2 bag)

Here's a quick update:

Tues 8/16 Zone 4: 3/4 grocery bag
Fri 8/19 Zone 0 - 1/4 grocery bag -- only thing of interest was nail clippers...I hadn't thought of doing that while on the beach, but I suppose it's as good of a time as any.

week 16--christie sees a shark and holes in zone 0

I saw a dead 3 1/2 ft. shark in the surf yesterday morning. I collected 3/4 spackle bucket (1.5 bags) of garbage. There was a man digging a giant hole for his kids to play in & I let him know about the turtles and asked if he would fill it back in before they left.  He didn't know about the turtles and it looked like they were staying at Duneridge.  I am not sure if some of the postcards about the turtles are in there clubhouse, but I think it would be a good idea to put them there.

week 15--Christie in zone 0

Getting my report in a little late. I didn't find to much garbage last week and it was one of the nicest sunrises I have seen all summer. I am still finding plastic bottles, cig butts and a couple kids toys.  In all I collected 1/3 of a spackle bucket. (1/2 bag)

We had on 1 water bottle, 1 drink can, 1 towel and 1 wash cloth to pick up this morning.

It was wonderful seeing you and John and all of the turtlers last week.  I loved meeting Jackson last night!!  He's darling!

Here are the updates for the week of 8/8:

8/9: Zone 4 - 1 full bag, although not blatant stuff - looked like mostly things that could have been missed when dragging beach stuff home.
8/12: Zone 0 - 1/2 bag -- of the treasures I found not one, not two - but three condom wrappers and 3 women's sunglasses.  Coincidence?  I don't think so.

week 13--Christie reports from zone 0

I collected about half a spackle bucket (one bag) on Wed. morning and also found someone's towels and sheet covered in sand.  I unburied them and left them there, thinking maybe people where out and then it started pouring and they ran to the hotel. I also picked up a cheap plastic kite with the string and the usual butts and plastic bottle caps.
